There is actually a wealth of amazing World of Warcraft books available. Written by established fantasy authors and detailing some of the biggest events in Azeroth’s history, there really are some truly fantastic World of Warcraft books on the market - books that rival even some of the best fantasy book series in terms of quality.
1. Rise of the Horde
This title of this World of Warcraft book really says it all. The Rise of The Horde is exactly that, a novel that charts the beginning of the faction we know as The Horde. The story is set during a time before the Orcs became corrupted by Gul’dan and the magic of The Burning Legion, and essentially follows the tale as it unravels. Rise of the Horde is a deep-dive into one of the most interesting and well-developed sagas of Warcraft lore, and has been highly regarded by fans as one of the best World of Warcraft books you can buy since it was released in 2007. 2. Stormrage
As a World of Warcraft fan, Illidan might be the Stormrage you are most familiar with, but he isn’t the only member of the family worth paying attention to. A vast spirit world full of potent magical energy, it’s an intriguing element of mythos we rarely get to explore. It’s also worth noting this is one of the only World of Warcraft books that is devoted to a modern narrative - in that its set between Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm, and not many years in the past.
3. The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm
Speaking of modern World of Warcraft books, The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm is another that fits nicely within this bracket. The novel is a detailed look at the events leading up Deathwing’s assault upon Azeroth, and heavily involves fan-favourite Thrall. If you enjoyed the lore around the events of Cataclysm, such as the sundering of the world or the mythos behind Deathwing the Destroyer, take some time to get into this World of Warcraft book.
4. Arthas: Rise of the Lich King
World of Warcraft books tend to be about things rising, and it’s not always for the better. Arthas: Rise of The Lich King follows the legend of Arthas Menethil as he descends into darkness, becomes ensnared by the warlock Ner’zhul, and eventually takes on the mantle of the Lich King. As you can imagine, starting as a young heir to the throne of Lordaeron and being trained as a Paladin, only to end up as a slave to The Burning Legion and Master of the Scourge, is quite a story. A World of Warcraft book well worth your time.
5. World of Warcraft: Chronicle
Okay, so World of Warcraft: Chronicle isn’t actually one book, it’s a collection of three. The chronicle series is essentially themed like a nonfiction history text for Azeroth, in that it aims to explore past events, lore and myths surrounding the world. Of course, it’s all fictional, but it’s not told in the form of a narrative. Instead, it’s framed as a selection of campfire-style tales and legends. If you want to learn the histories of Azeroth and connecting worlds, these are the definitive World of Warcraft books to get you started. Featuring closer looks at Titans, The Dark Portal, The Burning Legion and more, there is a lot for fans of World of Warcraft to enjoy here.
